About yoga

Yoga is a journey from discord to harmony. It is a means by which to achieve optimum health, increase vitality and to calm the waves of mind. Yoga originates in India where it has been practised for thousands of years. The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit ‘Yuj’ which means ‘to yoke’ or join.

Yoga is ultimately the unification of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness. This union bestows liberation from sorrow and suffering and leads to a state of blissful realisation.

The yoga method most often found in the west is characterised by an emphasis on physical practices such as postures and breath. It is called ‘Hatha Yoga.’ Within the Hatha Yoga tradition there are a wide variety of styles to choose from.

We often get emails from beginners asking us to recommend a style of yoga, or class for them. With 9 different styles to choose from and over 90 classes a week it can be difficult to decide which class to join.Exeterlovesyoga founder James Russell has written an article to help newcomers to find out more about how to begin their yoga journey.
