Anusara yoga is a modern school of hatha yoga established in 1997. Its founder, John Friend, derived his style from the Iyengar method of yoga and reintroduced elements of Tantra and Hindu spirituality into a more health-oriented western approach to Yoga.
Anusara Yoga places more emphasis on tantric philosophical concepts than many other forms of Hatha Yoga commonly taught in the West.
What to expect in an Anusara class:
The practice of Anusara Yoga is broadly categorized into three parts, known as the Three A’s:
1. Attitude: is the “power of the heart as the force behind every action or expression in an asana.” It is “the aspiration to reawaken to our divine nature, and the celebration of life.”(John Friend)
2. Alignment, the “mindful awareness of how various parts of ourselves are integrated and interconnected.” (John Friend.)
3. Action, according to Friend, is the “natural flow of energy in the body, which provides both stability and joyful freedom.”
Anusara Yoga works with major alignment principles. When assuming a yoga pose, Anusara practitioners make subtle refinements on the pose’s physical alignment working in harmony with the body’s natural flow of energy.
